I don't drink every day, but several times a week — and when I do, it's usually pretty heavy. I've done therapy but had relapses. On the outside, I hide how much I drink as best I can.

I've noticed changes that I really hate: alcohol is slowly replacing all the other good things in life.

I don't have any outside support right now. I told my kids about my problem. They both decided on their own not to drink. They've got my back.

Having people around me who are honest and aware about alcohol issues really matters for how I deal with it. I just got your book Bye, Bye, Booze and I'm starting it this weekend.

Some of you know me as the doctor behind Bye, bye, Booze. I've spent a lot of time thinking about why some people's brains just won't quiet down — the racing thoughts, the sleep that never comes, the anxiety that sits in your chest like a rock. And for many of us, that's exactly why we reached for a drink in the first place.

Turns out, there's a molecule at the center of all of it. It's called GABA.

You've probably heard of serotonin and dopamine. But GABA? Almost nobody talks about it — even though it's the single most important calming neurotransmitter in your brain. One in three of your 100 trillion nerve connections is a GABA synapse. It's the reason benzodiazepines like Valium work. It's the reason alcohol relaxes you. And it's the chemical switch that puts you under for surgery.

When GABA is doing its job, you feel calm, focused, and ready for sleep. When it's not, things unravel — anxiety, insomnia, burnout, emotional eating, ADHD symptoms, the whole cascade. Sound familiar?

I wrote The GABA Fix to explain all of this in plain language. No medical jargon dump, no miracle promises. Just the science of what's actually happening in your brain, and what you can do about it — naturally. The book covers how to raise GABA through diet, exercise, and lifestyle, which supplements actually have evidence behind them (L-theanine, magnesium, taurine, passionflower, and others), and why the old claim that "oral GABA can't cross the blood-brain barrier" is probably wrong.

There's also a chapter on addiction and recovery that ties directly into what we discuss here on the forum. If you've ever wondered why early sobriety feels so physically brutal — restless, anxious, wired — GABA depletion is a big part of the answer.

The book was originally published in German by Penguin Random House and is now available in English on Amazon for the first time. Over 80 studies referenced, written by an actual doctor with actual patients. In a market that's currently flooded with AI-generated health books by fake authors, I figured that was worth mentioning.

Here's the link

If you pick it up, I'd genuinely love to hear what you think. And if you have questions about GABA, post them here — happy to dig into it with you.

— Bernd
