What Is Vitamin C? #
Vitamin C, chemically known as ascorbic acid (also referred to as ascorbate), is a water-soluble vitamin that the human body cannot produce on its own. The name derives from the Latin “scorbutus,” with an “a-” prefix meaning “without” — because adequate amounts of vitamin C prevent scurvy, the dreaded disease that once decimated sailors on long voyages. In people with an alcohol use disorder, vitamin C deficiency is especially common because alcohol depletes the vitamin through multiple pathways at once.
